The Gospel of Ernest

Lenten Reading for Saturday, February 16, 2013:
These sayings are from "A Journey with God" by Rev. Ernest Bodenweber, retired UCC Minister and former pastor in West Haven, CT.

2          We are here.  The heavens and the earth were here before us.  There has to be a reason.

13        The starting point of our journey is the desire to love and be loved not only in but beyond this world.

21        It sounds strange and even offensive to some to speak of God as "she" as well as "he," but this is because of our background, not because it is alien to God's nature.

40        This may seem too good to be true, but faith says it is too good not to be true.  Faith asks who are we to put limitations on God?

58        Striving for right living because of love for God does for character what mere intellectual assent cannot do.

70        There is no substitute for knowing each other, caring about each other, and having our hearts joined together in love.  We are born for this, and without it life is desolate.

85        How to apply love in dealing with complex social and political issues is not easy to say  the least, but love is the only framework within which solutions will be found.

99        In Jesus we have the "skin face" of God.

118      What happened to Jesus' body?  Does the empty tomb suggest that it was somehow transformed into life by God, or not?  Of course we don't know, so let's be satisfied that God knows and leave it at that.
